Liverpool Defender Allays Ankle Injury Fears

Liverpool fans were left in a state of worry after star defender Virgil Van Dijk sustained an ankle injury during the win over Tottenham Hotspur, but they can heave a sigh of relief after the Dutch international centre back revealed that the problem is not serious.

Van Dijk told Sky Sports after the game that he expects to be fit for the next league game.

The former Celtic and Groningen defender sustained the injury while he was trying to stop French midfielder Moussa Sissoko from scoring in the second half of the Reds’ Premier League clash at home to Champions League chasers Tottenham Hotspur.

Virgil Van Dijk was hugely influential again for Liverpool who secured a last-minute win against Spurs to leapfrog defending champions Manchester City into the top spot on the Premier League table.

The 27-year-old has played every league game for Liverpool this season.

Van Dijk and Liverpool took a first half lead through Roberto Firmino off an assist from Andy Robertson before Spurs equalised for the hosts in the second half through Brazilian forward Lucas Moura.

The game was level until the final minute when Hugo Lloris handed Liverpool the winning goal via a Toby Alderweireld own goal.

The 2-1 win over Spurs was able to take Liverpool to the Premier League summit.
