Great Escape: Liverpool To Fight For Title On Final Day

Liverpool will take the Premier League title fight to the final day after they saw off a stubborn Newcastle United team in their penultimate league game of the season.

Liverpool needed to win to take the league title fight to the last day of the season and that was what they did.

The Reds’ win was, however, not straightforward as they had to wait till the final ten minutes to get the all-important victory.

Liverpool substitute Divock Origi scored in the final minutes of their game against hosts Newcastle United to give his side a 3-2 win and the Premier League summit until Monday at least.

The Belgian international came on for star player Mohamed Salah in the final quarter of the game after the Egyptian international was stretched off with a head injury which he received via Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka’s knee to his head.

The scores were 2-2 before he was stretched off after Newcastle United had pegged back their guests on two occasions.

The Liverpool lead from Virgil Van Dijk inside the first quarter an hour of the game was cancelled out almost immediately by Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu before the aforementioned Salah hit the back of the net to give the Reds a 2-1 halftime lead and also extend his lead at the top of the topscorer chart having scored his 22nd goal against the Magpies.

Solomon Rondon scored a second equaliser for the hosts at the start of the second half before the late show from Origi took Liverpool to the Premier League summit.
