Why Klopp substituted Van Dijk against Southampton

Coach Jurgen Klopp in an after match statement at Anfield disclosed why he removed his top central defender, Virgil van Dijk.

The German stated that Van Dijk was removed in the second half of the game over a knock he sustained during the match.

Klopp added that the Netherlands defender already has a rib injury which he got prior to the match against the French side, Paris Saint Germain in the Uefa Champions League.

However, former England striker turned Pundit, Darius Vassell has a different opinion about the removal of Van Dijk.

According to Vassell, Liverpool coach, Klopp removed Virgil van Dijk from the squad because he wanted to rest him for the match they have this week.

This is because the Reds will be facing Chelsea on two occasions this week.

The first one in the Carabao League which is on Wednesday and the second in the English Premier League on Saturday and both games will be played at Anfield.

So, it is in the best interest for the Reds to start Van Dijk in the two matches as he happens to be the main key holding Liverpool defense at the moment.

Liverpool are currently at the top of the EPL table.
