Record-breaking Failure: Liverpool Miss Out On Major Honour With Record Points

Merseyside giants Liverpool have missed out on the Premier League title after they were piped to it by rivals Manchester City who have retained the title they won last season.

Liverpool were unable to win the first of the two major honours they were chasing this season.

The Reds have been on the hunt for the Premier League title and the Champions League trophy for the better part of this season but they have now missed out on the former leaving them with only Europe‘s premier club competition to fight for.

Ahead of the final day of this Premier League season, the Reds trailed Manchester City by a solitary point and that was how it stayed after the last set of games.

Manchester City had 95 points while Liverpool were a further point back with 94 points.

Both teams won their last game of the season for Manchester City to retain their title.

The Citizens were given an early scare through a Glenn Murray goal in the first half but they bounced back through goals from Sergio Aguero and Aymeric Laporte before the halftime interval.

Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan wrapped up a convincing 4-1 win over hosts Brighton for Manchester City to win the Premier League title for the second successive season.

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane scored twice for his team either side of the halftime interval to give the Reds a 2-0 win over high-flyers Wolverhampton Wanderers but it was not enough to win the title.

The Reds finished with 97 points from 38 games while Manchester City were crowned champions.

The Merseysiders recorded the most points (97) in Premier League history without winning the title.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to their Champions League final clash with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid on June 1.
