‘Sign him now’ Arsenal legend urge club to sign talented 29-year-old to solve defensive problem

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has told his former club to bring in Borussia Dortmund central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the summer to revamp the clubs poor defence.

Knocked out of Europe

The North Londoners suffered a 1-0 defeat to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the return leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final during the week to end their hopes of lifting the trophy following a 3-2 aggregate loss.

Arsenal are in the sixth position in the English Premier League log and won’t make the top four for the second time in two years to leave fans digesting the prospect of another season without UEFA Champions League football.

Arsene Wenger’s team have lost 10 of their 17 matches away in the League this term to undermine their good form at home, while Arsenal have conceded 48 goals in 35 appearances in the League.

Arsenal eye Greek defender

According to reports, the north London club will target defender Papastathopoulos to improve their defence ahead of next season.

Robert Pires thinks the Greece Centre-half would be a good recruit to the Arsenal team.

The Gunners lost 3-0 to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium back in February.

They have not won the English Premier League title since the 2003-04 season.

Long-standing manager, Frenchman Arsene Wenger is set to stand down as head coach at the end of the current season.
