News reports coming from Italy  revealed English premier league giants Manchester United want Napoli star Dries Mertens and has offered the Belgian player a £4m-a-year contract.
The Italian source insisted that the Old Trafford club have offered Mertens a deal that is worth 4 million pounds each season after tax, including bonuses.
La Repubblica claimed that Manchester United top officials have met with the Belgium international’s representatives earlier this month March to render him an offer. However, we are yet to hear Mertens speak about the contract and know what his decisions will be.
The 29-year-old has been in superb form for his Serie A side this season so far, and he will have just one year remaining on his current contract with the Italian club this summer. However, it was also revealed that Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis is refusing to decline from his offer of a deal that is worth 2.5 million pounds a year.
It was also added that Inter Milan are also set to compete with the Old Trafford club for Mertens’ signature, even though the Milan club is still yet to make an offer for him.
This season, he has, in 26 appearances in the Italian league, scored 19 goals for Napoli.
That of course is an impressive stats that shows how he could add more quality to Jose Mourinho’s team.
From all indications, Manchester United are currently relying on just Zlatan Ibrahimovic who won’t be around for too long.
Having a player like Mertens – since it is not yet certain Mourinho will get Griezmann, will make a possible impact.
