Why Virgil Van Dijk wore the captaincy band against Red Star Belgrade

Liverpool hosted Serbian club, Red Star Belgrade at Anfield on Wednesday night in the Uefa Champions League.

The game ended in a total victory for the Reds as their super trio strikers of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah gave them four goals to get all three points.

However, during the match it was visible that Liverpool’s captain and the vice-captain ( Jordan Henderson and James Milner) were not on the pitch of play as the Reds center back defender and Holland international, Virgil Van Dijk wore the captain armband.

Jordan Henderson was ruled out of the UCL match against the Serbian club owing to a hamstring injury, on the other hand, James Milner was seated on the bench and didn’t start for Liverpool.

Coach Jurgen Klopp in a recent post-match statement hinted that it was not his decision to make Van Dijk the captain but Liverpool squad felt he was worthy of the post and they voted for him.

Klopp hinted that Van Dijk got the role probably because of his character, but he stressed that ‘it was not his decision.’

In another news, Liverpool FC will play a home game against Cardiff City this weekend in the English Premier League.
