It has been revealed that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier almost joined Manchester United if not for the timely intervention of club chairman, Daniel Levy.
According to former Spurs player Darren Anderton, Dier was poised to join up with the Red Devils earlier this summer but Levy rejected the deal despite the player’s desire to leave for the Old Trafford.
The former Tottenham star also claims that the midfielder was keen on the move but did not want to force the move, and ended up changing his mind.
Jose Mourinho is believed to be a keen admirer of Eric Dier’s midfield qualities and views him as an ideal replacement for Michael Carrick who is nearing his retirement from professional football.
United were said to have contacted Spurs over the possibility of signing Dier, as they planned to get a central midfielder to consolidate the efforts of Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera in the midfield area, with reports that the latter was a subject of interest from Barcelona earlier this summer.
Having failed in their approach for Dier, Manchester United shifted their gaze and signed Nemanja Matic from Chelsea instead for 40 million pounds.
Dier has grown to be one of the best midfielders for the Three Lions in recent years but has not quite had the chance to prove himself under Mauricio Pochettino who sometimes deploys him at the heart of defence.
