Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger retires at 31

Former Liverpool and Denmark defender Daniel Agger has announced his retirement from football after an injury-hit spell with Brondby.

Agger, 31, played for Liverpool between 2006 and 2014 before returning to first club Brondby on a two-year contract after suffering with fitness issues.

The return to his homeland brought no real improvement, though, and the centre-back has now announced his retirement.

Thank you for your support.A great experience. It’s sad,but it is the right decision to stop. I’m proud of my career. He wrote on his twitter page. Daniel Agger (@DanielAgger) June 9, 2016

Agger, who was captain of the Denmark national team, held a news conference in his homeland to explain the decision on Thursday.

He told reporters: “I’m pulling the plug now. It’s been difficult, I’ve had my doubts up until the end. But every time I’ve thought it through I’ve reached the same conclusion, and that is to stop. So I don’t have any doubts that I’m making the right decision.”
