Why Van Dijk Must Win Trophies To Be Great

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has told Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk that he has to win trophies before the Dutch centre back can be referred to as one of the legends of the game.

Dutch international right-back Melchiot spoke about Virgil Van Dijk and the need for him to win trophies in a chat with the Daily Express.

Virgil Van Dijk has been turning heads since his move from Southampton to Liverpool at the start of last year with many comparing him to retired defensive stalwarts like Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta and many more.

The Dutch international star is the most expensive defender in the history of world football after the Reds paid £75m to secure his transfer from the Saints.

Since his transfer to Liverpool, the 27-year-old has been able to transform the Reds defence into one of the best on the European football scene.

Van Dijk was crucial to the Reds’ run to the Champions League final last season before they were beaten 3-1 by outgoing European champions Real Madrid.

His performances have propelled Liverpool to the top of Premier League table and the Reds have the best defensive records in the division with just 18 goals conceded in the 31 games played this term.
