Champions League finalists Liverpool have reportedly been usurped in the race to sign highly-rated Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Julian Brandt in this summer’s transfer window.

Julian Brandt is one of several players been linked with the Reds this summer.

According to the specific publication from the Daily Mirror, Liverpool have been overtaken by fellow Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur in the quest to sign the aforementioned Brandt.

German international Brandt has been in very good form for a Bayer Leverkusen side chasing qualification for Champions League football next season.

Liverpool were previously in pole position to sign him during the summer transfer window which opened in the Premier League on Thursday but the Reds have now been usurped by Spurs.

North London giants Tottenham Hotspur are in need of a new midfielder at least and the German has been identified as a prime candidate for the job.

The midfield need for Spurs could rise to two if Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen decides to leave the club this summer as he has one year left on his contract.

On his part, Julian Brandt has two years left on his Bayer Leverkusen contract with a £21m release clause.

He has scored nine goals and provided a whopping 17 assists for Bayer Leverkusen in all competitions this term.
