Merseyside giant Liverpool have received a major transfer boost in their hopes of securing the services of Virgil van Dijk from Premier League side Southampton after La Liga giant Barcelona cooled their interest in the defender, as per reports.
The Southampton central defender was in the wishlist of the Catalan club, who are in the transfer market for a defender in January.
Van Dijk’s potential move to Anfielde was the transfer saga of the summer transfer window, with Klopp’s team publicly apologising to the Saints for approaching the player illegally.
But the speculations refused to end and the Dutchman was still strongly linked with making a switch to Anfield.
However, the defender stayed put at St Mary’s Stadium and the Catalan were then credited with an interest in the player.
However, the Spanish La Liga giant, who are in dire need of defensive reinforcement does not look likely to battle the Reds for Van Dijk.
Technical director of the side Robert Fernandez is against the transfer as he is not convinced about the Dutchman’s qualities and feels the 26-year-old centre-half is too expensive, as per Mundo Deportivo.
And it looks like Barcelona have now switched their focus towards Virgil Van Dijk’s compatriot Matthijs de Ligt, who plays for Eredivisie side Ajax Amsterdam.
