Arsene Wenger signed Granit Xhaka last year for Arsenal and the talented player quickly settled to life at the Emirates, becoming the manager’s preferred choice in the defensive midfield role.
Wenger also had the likes of Elneny and Coquelin – and these guys can effectively play in the defensive midfield position as well.
Still, there are speculations the French boss is still trying to sign another holding midfielder, and if reports currently circulating in the media are anything to go by, then we shouldn’t be surprised to see William Carvalho wearing an Arsenal shirt next year.
Carvalho, who currently plays for Sporting, played a big role helping Portugal win the Euro 2016 trophy last year.
And according to A Bola, the North London club want to sign the 25-year-old in the summer transfer window.
The Portuguese international has a release clause of $52.9million in his contract at Sporting CP, and the report also said Arsenal should be ready to pay up to €40M for his signature.
Sporting are currently sitting on the top spot of the Primeira Liga table and are three points ahead of second-placed Porto.
It is understood they won’t mind selling their captain for the right price at the end of the season, and Arsenal want everything to be done before the player travel to Russia with the rest of the Portuguese party for the World Cup.
