Stan Collymore insisted that Man United Star player Wayne Rooney deserves to be placed in the same category as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Rooney made history last weekend with a goal against Stoke City that finally made him Manchester United’s all-time top-goalscorer thereby usurping Sir Bobby Charlton’s 43-year long record of 249 goals.
His goal also ensured that his side maintained their unbeaten record ahead of their game against Hull City on Thursday.
And former Liverpool striker Collymore, writing for the Daily Mirror, insisted that the England international was in the same bracket as Ronaldo and Messi.
“If you take out the big two [Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo], he [Rooney] has had as good a career as anybody in the world over the last decade,”
“You don’t just break Sir Bobby Charlton’s England or Manchester United’s goal records without being something very special.
“So huge congratulations to Wayne Rooney for achieving both, for a fantastic career that has seen him win virtually every trophy.” he said.
If we should be realistic, Wayne Rooney doesn’t come close to either Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in terms of ability. The duo displaying the same levels of otherworldly brilliance each week without suffering any injuries or set-backs. History will surely remember both of them as perhaps the most iconic figures of the 21st century.
But Wayne Rooney will indeed be remembered as a pre-eminent force within the realms of the English game. The player who at a tender age of 18 moved to a big team as Man United and scored a hat-trick on his debut, till he ended up becoming the club’s – and England’s – all time top goalscorer.
