Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool legend Stan Collymore believes that Reds defender Virgil Van Dijk is the best centre back in world football.

The former Reds’ forward lauded Dutch international Van Dijk in his column for the Daily Mirror as he compared him with Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.

Stan Collymore praised Virgil Van Dijk as an excellent reader of the game before adding how much the former Celtic and Southampton player has been able to improve the Liverpool team defensively.

Virgil Van Dijk is the reigning world’s most expensive defender after Liverpool splashed £75m to secure his transfer from Southampton at the start of last year.

Since his transfer to Liverpool, the Reds have become an improved team on the defensive front.

The 27-year-old played a prominent role in the Liverpool team that reached the final of last season’s Champions League before they were beaten by eventual winners and defending champions Real Madrid.

Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in their Champions League final clash last summer.

Virgil Van Dijk has been the best player of the season for many fans and pundits in the Reds’ quest to win the Premier League title.

Liverpool have conceded just 15 goals in 29 games with Van Dijk at the heart of the defensive success recorded by the Reds this season.
