Jurgen Klopp needs to sign a top defender for his team when the January transfer window opens. This will enable the German boss to compete adequately for the big trophies in the second half of the season.
The former Dortmund manager was expected to sign a new centre-back during the summer transfer window, but he couldn’t complete a deal for anyone.
During the summer, Liverpool were heavily linked with Dutch international Virgil Van Dijk, but Southampton refused to let go of him.
And like the last term, Liverpool have been shaky at the back this campaign, conceding 17 goals already in just 11 premier league games.
Of recent, Van Dijk made it known that he is happy at St Mary’s, which means Liverpool must look for another quality alternative when January comes.
In the summer window, the Merseyside club were also interested in another defender in the person of Jose Gimenaz.
The Uruguayan international is one of the best young defenders in the Spanish top flight, but he has mainly warmed the bench this season at Atletico Madrid.
Gimenaz has already played 37 times for Uruguay’s senior side acquiring lots of experience.
He has a release clause of £54million in his contract at Atletico, but considering that he will be out of contract next summer, the Spanish club will be willing to sell for a fee below that – A transfer fee Liverpool should take advantage of.
