Napoli forward Dries Mertens is on the verge of signing an extension to his contract at the Italian side despite keen interest from Manchester United.

The Belgian star has been tipped to leave Naples this summer after stalling on renewing his contract with the club, sparking interest from a number of clubs in the Premier League and Manchester United believed at the fore-front on the transfer

Reports in Italian outlet Calciomercato claims that Mertens have been a target for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho is understood to be keen admirer of his abilities

However, Napoli are unwilling to part with the forward because he is a key figure in the squad and have started steps to see him remain at the club, with a new offer.

The report also claim that Napoli are ready to offer the 30-year-old a new deal that will extend his stay till 2021 which will him earn around £3-3.5m a year which will eclipse Manchester United’s offer for him.

The Belgian has been a key figure for the Serie A side this season, scoring 30 goals in all competitions so far this seaon.

Jose Mourinho will be disappointed to see one of his targets slip away ahead of a busy summer transfer window.
