There are new reports that Aston Villa could come for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the January window transfer.

Sam Johnson desires first team football action, but the 23-year-old goalkeeper’s chances at Old Trafford is looking extremely limited. He is the third-choice goalkeeper at Manchester United, having two other goalkeepers in the persons of David De Gea and Sergio Romero ahead of him. Nevertheless, coach Jose Mourinho is an admirer of the player.

Johnstone spent an impressive spell on loan with Preston North End last season, and with Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce looking to strengthen his goalkeeping department, Johnstone could be the ideal signing.

Aston Villa signed goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini in the summer, but he has failed to really stamp his authority on the number one spot. Despite Villa manager using Gollini for most of the games, Bruce is looking and keen for more competition. Both Jed Steer and Mark Bunn are currently injured, with Bunn in-particular looking shaky when he does get a chance.

Aston Villa are in the market for new players in January, with a striker, a central midfielder, and now a goalkeeper seemingly top of their priority list. Following their 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic yesterday at Villa Park, Steve Bruce boys climbed to 13th in the table.
