Manchester United are believed to have gone ahead of Liverpool in their bid to secure the signature of Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes by making a contact with the player.

The Red Devils and the Merseyside club have both indicated interest in the Portuguese international with claims that they will both make moves as soon as the coming summer transfer window is opened but United have moved a step forward with an inquiry of his availability.

Bruno Fernandes is known to be one of the best players in the Portuguese League and has impressed as a captain to help his side with 22 goals so far this season. This has caught the attention of a number of Premier League sides and other European top guns.

The 24-year-old has got a huge £90 million release clause, as reported owing to his improved performance which is expected to be of help to United should they land him in the summer window.

However, the chances of Bruno Fernandes joining the Old Trafford will be tied to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and whether he keeps his job or not at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and United played a 0-0 draw in their Premier League tie on Sunday.
