Liverpool have dropped plans to sign Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Anfield following reports that Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign him as a cover for Sadio Mane who is currently on national team duties at Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon with Senegal.

National teammate, Georginio Wijnaldum also fuelled the speculation last month when he declared his desire to see Promes come to Anfield after commenting on a photo of the attacker on a private jet which suggests Promes is bound for Merseyside.

However, reports in the Daily Mail have it that Liverpool have shelved plans to sign the winger this month and suspend the move until the summer.

However, Everton are also believed to be keen on signing the forward.

Promes has been impressive for Spartak this season, scoring eight goals in 17 appearances and could be a good cover for injured Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane.

The Reds have been rampant in the Premier League this season but has also showed signs of cracks in their defence line, leaking some cheap goals but Klopp has hinted he will concentrate more on homegrown stars rather than buying stars in the January window.
