The Portuguese boss delivers the latest update on captain Wayne Rooney ahead of his side’s EFL Cup final clash against Southampton.

Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho has revealed that star player Wayne Rooney will definitely be involved for his Manchester United side in the EFL Cup final clash against Southampton.

Jose Mourinho and his United men head into the game looking to win the first major trophy under the Portuguese’s reign at Old Trafford following his appointment last summer.

Current Manchester United all-time-goalscorer Wayne Rooney has been training with the Manchester United first-team squad in recent days.

The England striker has however not featured for the Red Devils since their goalless draw with Hull City at the start of the month.

However, the manager Mourinho has confirmed that Rooney is fit and will play a part for the Old Trafford club when they take on Southampton at Wembley in the EFL Cup final.

Mourinho speaking at his pre-match news conference on Friday afternoon said Rooney is fine and he is training with the team.

“He was not selected for Saint-Etienne because he was not ready to play but he was ready to have one more important training session and no doubts, he is involved in the game.”

The boss also confirmed that Armenian star Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been ruled out for Manchester United ahead of the EFL Cup final, but that Carrick is available.

“Michael is available. He was clever, he had the experience and left the pitch in right moment.

“So Michael is available. Mkhitaryan is out. Jones, let’s see and decide tomorrow.”

The red devils head into the game after booking ftheir place in the last 16 of the Europa League where they will play Russian side Rostov.
