Arsenal start their Europa League campaign tomorrow against FC Koln, and the club’s legend Ray Parlour thinks his former side should imitate what Manchester United did last term and qualify for the Champions League by getting the Europa League crown.
Many top clubs are known to not put much importance on the Europa League, but Parlour indicates Arsenal could strive to go all the way in the competition.
Arsene Wenger is usually a regular in the Champions League, but the best he could do last season was to end the campaign on the fifth position on the premier league table, for the first time in 17 years.
Last time they played in the Europa League (which was called the UEFA Cup then), the gunners were able to progress to the final but missed out on the silverware after losing to Galatasaray on penalties.
Former Arsenal midfielder Parlour didn’t forget the game too soon, and believes the competition is one worth winning for the North London club.
Speaking recently to Arsenal Player, Ray says every team will love to be in the Champions League to the Europa League, but a club needs to embrace reality once they find themselves in the Europa League.
Drawing attention to how Jose Mourinho was able to grant Manchester United a Champions League ticket for this season just by winning the Europa League last term, the former England international suggests Wenger can walk the same path.
“It is worth winning.” Ray admitted.
