Former Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre has revealed that the club failed to sign Dele Alli because of his demands.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been regarded as one of the best midfielder in the Premier League due to his brilliant displays for Tottenham Hotspurs, drawing interest from several clubs.

Before his move to Spurs, Alli was also linked with a move to Anfield with reports that he met with former Liverpool Brendan Rodgers over a potential deal which could not be finalised due to his demands.

Ian Ayre revealed: “There was interest in the player, but where it got to was that the demands at that time were not fitting to what he had achieved at that point,

“We didn’t feel the player matched that demand. It’s easy to sit and say ‘look what you could have bought’, but how many players could you apply the reverse of that to? That’s the truth.”

There are speculations that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is ready to break the bank to sign Dele Alli while he plans to add more bite to his current squad next season, following their inconsistent displays so far in the Premier League.

However, Tottenham Hotspur will be reluctant to let one of the best players leave the club as they hope to build on their current success next season.
