“I thought it was a prank” Gianfranco Zola speaks on his appointment as Chelsea assistant coach

Chelsea new manager, Maurizio Sarri on his arrival at Stamford Bridge won the hearts of the Blues fans, who have been sceptical about his appointment by making Gianfranco Zola his assistant coach.

As a player, Gianfranco Zola was a cult hero at Chelsea winning multiple cups competitions in the English Premier League and Europe at large.

He also won the hearts of Chelsea fans with his brilliant performance.

Following his football career, Gianfranco Zola ventured into football management career, he was the coach of Birmingham before he was made Chelsea’s assistant coach by Maurizio Sarri.

Gianfranco Zola in a recent statement disclosed what it felt like when he first received a call from Coach Sarri to be his assistant.

According to Zola during an interview with Tubes on Soccer AM which was confirmed by Sky Sports, the legendary player disclosed he thought the appointment was a prank.

He said, “I thought it was a prank call! I was surprised, I didn’t expect that.”

Zola hinted that Sarri told him there was a possibility of the two of them working ‘if I was interested and I said: ‘yes I’m coming!’ It was a big surprise.”

The former Chelsea star said himself and Sarri had only spoken on the phone a couple of times and during an interview for Sky Italia, but he stressed that they ‘never spoken about football or anything outside of that.’
