According to reports, it appears Southampton defender Jose Fonte will end up being the first player to be signed to Old Trafford by Mourinho in the January window transfer.
The Southampton FC captain was a target for the Manchester United boss in the summer transfer window.
There are glaring signs that Mourinho is looking to add more experience to his squad to mentor the club’s young players, and according to a new source, he has earmarked bringing in Fonte as a high priority.
Jose Fonte has been with Southampton since their tussle in League One but the 32-year old now faces an uncertain future.
He has just 18 months left on his contract and was offered an £80,000-a-week deal after helping Portugal to Euro 2016 glory.
Reports had it that he however snubbed the proposal because Southampton chiefs were not willing to extend his stay beyond next season.“There’s no contract on the table.
“There was in the summer, they offered me a pay rise. They didn’t offer me a new contract.
“They offered me a pay rise which I’m entitled to discuss with my agent and entitled to say no to as well.
“I’m entitled to have my own opinion. So apart from that, that’s it.” Fonte said.
