One thing that caught attention in Mesut Ozil’s master class performance against Leicester City on Monday in the Premier League clash is the fact that he had the captain armband on.
Arsenal had won the game 3 – 1 where Hector Bellerin’s own goal was cancelled by the German international before it was completed with a brace by Gabon international Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
`However, manager Unai Emery was asked if there was any need to hand the former Real Madrid star the armband in subsequent games, and he simply did not give a clear answer.
All he could say was that Ozil’s performance and commitment was not determined by what he wears on his arm, stressing that the player will give his best anytime he is on the pitch.
According to the Spanish manager, the players are already aware of the demand they have for each game and that is usually met with their commitment, citing Stephan Lichtsteiner as an example for playing a role he was not meant to play because of the unavailability of others.
Meanwhile, Ozil has so far scored three goals this season in the nine Premier League games and has become the highest goal scoring German of all time in the Premier League history with a total of 30 goals.
