It appears Luke Shaw’s time at Old Trafford is over after he was ignored for Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Swansea City in the League Cup on Tuesday night.
The defender was tipped to be part of the starting XI that clashed with the Swans at the Liberty Stadium, but he was only introduced into the game in the 87th minute.
The 22-year-old has been struggling back from an ankle issue, but despite been fit for the last six weeks, he has played just once this season so far – which is the game against Burton Albion in the last round, and it was for just 45 minutes.
He was also completely overlooked in the recent game, and questions have been raised about his future at the Manchester club.
To make matters worse for Luke, the manager chose to give 19-year-old Axel Tuanzebe the chance to prove himself. The teenager performed brilliantly and was considered the man of the match after the game.
The youngster was handed his debut when Manchester United played Wigan last term. And while Shaw is being starved of opportunities this season, Axel has passed a message to Mourinho that he is capable to become a first-team regular at Old Trafford.
As things stand now, it doesn’t seem like Luke can get back into Mourinho’s first-team – not with Axel impressing.
He will be out of contract at the end of the season but his side are expected to trigger a 12-month extension.
