It has been revealed that Manchester United was beaten to the signature of Xherdan Shaqiri.
The Swiss winger joined Liverpool from Stoke City for £12.5 million following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
Reports in Blick have it that United boss Jose Mourinho was also interested in Shaqiri, and had already opened talks with winger before Liverpool snapped the former Bayern Munich star.
The report also revealed that Shaqiri was more interested in the move to Anfield due to Klopp’s friendly nature.
West Ham United and Southampton were also credited with interests in Shaqiri before he eventually signed for Liverpool.
However, it is understood that Jurgen Klopp views Shaqiri as an alternative option on the wings and will not alter his formation for the player, this was evident in cameo appearance during their season opener against West Ham United.
United on the other hand, have since moved to other targets but could not bring in a winger despite reports that Mourinho wanted to bring in another winger after getting displeased with Anthony Martial performances last season.
Alexis Sanchez who was a first option on the left wing, was unable impress Old Trafford faithfuls following his big money move to United during the January transfer window, despite his contract just remaining six months to expire.
