Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin has rejected the chance to sign for Manchester United, Sky Sports reports.

The 32-year-old entered negotiations with United officials over a potential move to Old Trafford on deadline day, as the English giants hoped they could seal a move for the defender.

Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is keen on signing a centre-back before the end of the summer window and has tasked the club on getting a suitable player. United had hoped they will net a deal with Atletico Madrid for Godin but the defender rejected the idea and signed an extension to his deal at the Wanda Metropolitan.

It is understood that Godin’s release clause is believed to be around £18 million as he entered his final year of contract at Atleti before deciding to sign a new deal.

United were said to have hoped that they will able to sign the defender and offer him a contract worth £8 million per year.

This latest setback means Manchester United will have to wait till January transfer window, before signing a central defender unless they spring up another surprise before the window shuts Thursday evening.

Besiktas defender Domangoj Vida has been reported to be on the lookout for a new club in the Premier League and a deal around £20 million get him to leave Turkey.
