Expensive Failure: Ex-Liverpool Star Booed During UCL Clash

Philippe Coutinho

Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho endured one of his worst games since his move to the club after he was booed by his own fans.

The former Liverpool player was booed by the Barcelona fans when he was subbed off during their UEFA Champions League (UCL) game on Wednesday night.

Philippe Coutinho has not been able to live up to the expectations of the Barcelona fans since his big money transfer to the Nou Camp in January 2018.

Barcelona paid an initial transfer fee of £116m plus add-ons to sign him from Liverpool during last year’s winter transfer window.

Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona controversially.

The Brazilian international was substituted just before the hour mark during the Champions League game against his former club and his substitution was greeted by a chorus of boos.

Portuguese fullback Nelson Semedo replaced Coutinho.

As at the time of his substitution, Barcelona had a 1-0 lead courtesy the first half strike from Luis Suarez, another former Liverpool player.

Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi went on to add two more goals in the second half to give the Catalans a comfortable 3-0 lead ahead of the second leg at Anfield next week Tuesday.

Liverpool have a lot of work to do to overturn that deficit and seal a spot in the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid.
