Latest Transfer Update: Arsenal Considering Loan Move For World Cup Winner

Per Mertesacker

Latest revelation has it that EPL club Arsenal FC are considering the option of sending team captain Per Mertesacker on loan this January. Mertesacker is yet to play this season after picking up a knee injury in a friendly in July.

Mertesacker who won the world cup with Germany suffered a setback on his return to training this month as he picked up a new calf problem. No deadline has been set for when he can play for  Arsenal again, but it appears he won’t be coming back too soon.

The 32-year old would see his contract getting expired in the summer and he is so unlikely to get many opportunities before the end of the season. But it appears Arsenal want him to continue with them, and are looking to give him the chance to prove that he deserves a new contract.

The £70,000-per-week earner is also interested in remaining put at The Emirates though he admitted that there is competition for places with players like Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel Paulista as regular starters for Arsenal.

“A new Arsenal contract has absolute priority for me. But no dates have been set [for talks],” Mertesacker said back in November. “Arsenal has the highest priority for me. Everything else is pure speculation, and I won’t join the discussion.”

The Times additionally stated that the North London club will assess the fitness of Mertesacker and they will keep their options open till the end of this January transfer window. If the Germany International is not deemed fit to be named in the squad for the Champions League knockout stages before February 1, then Arsenal will  allow him to join any club on loan.
