Former Arsenal player Martin Keown feels new tactician Unai Emery needs a footballer like Paris Saint-Germain midfield maestro Marco Verratti in his side.

The Spanish tactician was unveiled as the new Gunners boss on Wednesday, replacing Arsene Wenger after he stepped aside following his 22 years at the North London club at the end of the campaign.

Unai Emery himself was available for the role after just leaving French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint Germain, where he enjoyed a reasonable level of success despite some eyebrows raised over how his time in Paris makes him suitable for the Gunners job.

Still, the Arsenal legend has offered some hints to the new manager in charge and feels signing a combative midfielder like Verratti could be important to making things solid at the Emirates.

Keown recommend world-class midfielder

Keown said the supporters want to see a side that can fight. Unia Emery needs to sign in a combative player like Verratti, who he worked with at Paris Saint-Germain, to add those qualities in Arsenal’s midfield.

It is clear that the side have lacked a genuine world-class midfielder, with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka not looking close to the required standard.
