North London giants Arsenal confirm goalkeeper Bernd Leno as their second summer signing. The Emirates giants agreed to a transfer deal with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for the goalkeeper and presently have four shot-stoppers in the first team for next campaign namely Czech international Petr Cech, Emi Martinez and David Ospina. The goalkeeper’s arrival could also mean one of Ospina, Cech and Martinez could be sold this summer window, either on loan or permanently.
Quality safe hand joins Arsenal
He played a total of 304 matches for Bayern Leverkusen after joining them from German side Vfb Stuttgart back in 2012, keeping a total of 100 clean sheets for his side. Leno is a German international goalkeeper but failed to make National team head coach Joachim Loew’s 23-man team for the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as a result of Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer, Barcelona safe hand Marc-Andre ter Stegen and PSG’s Kevin Trapp being ahead of Leno in the pecking order for the National team.
Highly rated goalie set for big things abroad
Leno, 26, kept 10 clean sheets in about 33 German Bundesliga matches the last term, as Bayern Leverkusen finished the League in the fifth position and booked a UEFA Europa League place next season. They ended up on the same point with third-placed team Schalke. He is certainly not a world-class goalie, but he’s sure highly-rated, having double figures clean sheets in the Bundesliga in five of his past seven campaigns.
