Five-time European champions Liverpool have been rocked by the news that Portuguese Super League giants Benfica have concluded plans to insert a huge release clause in the contract of one of their targets ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Liverpool are one of several clubs on the trail of highly rated Benfica teenager Joao Felix.

The latest development was revealed via the publication from Portuguese newspaper A Bola which claimed that Benfica want to commit the young attacking midfielder to a new contract that will see his release clause rise to €200m.

Joao Felix recently put pen to paper on a new contract at Benfica to take his release clause to the €120m (£105m) mark but it seems like the Portuguese giants are not content with the club holding out for as much money as possible due to the number of clubs on the trail of their player.

Major European clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and many more have all been linked with a move for Joao Felix.

The 19-year-old has been in superb form for Benfica this season after netting nine goals and also providing five assists in 23 appearances in all competitions.

He has had at least a goal and an assist in his last three games for Benfica in the league.
