Diego Costa is widely thought to be on the verge of finalizing a move back to his former Spanish club Atletico Madrid.
However, in a new development, the Spanish club’s president Enrique Cerezo has surprisingly indicated that they are not close to finalizing the transfer of the huge player.
Costa has been heavily linked with a move back to the Spanish capital for much of the summer despite the current situation at the club. recently, he was seen with a shirt of his former club after he was dropped from Chelsea’s pre-season squad.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte told the Spanish forward at the end of last season that he is not part of his plans at Stamford Bridge next term, and has been linked with a handful of top players as a replacement for Costa.
Reports have always suggested that the 28-year-old is on the verge of completing the transfer back to Atletico, but it seemed the deal is not as close as we thought as the club president has played down the prospect of Diego joining this summer.
Speaking to AS, Cerezo said:
‘Costa is a Chelsea player at the moment, and you know for a long time now that we cannot sign anyone (this summer),’
‘It is a long time since I spoke with him. At least a year, since he left here. I have seen him with the (Spanish) national team, but spoken to him very little.’
The Madrid club are still serving a transfer ban. Even though they are allowed to bring in new legs this summer, they won’t be able to register any of them till January.
