Arsenal have been tipped to sign Botafogo playmaker Matheus Fernandes after they have taken a step forward to watch the player by sending scouts according to the Calciomercato report.

Matheus Fernandes has been on the Gunners radar for a while now but it seems they are now ready to do some business in the coming weeks when the winter transfer window reopens.

The North London side are not alone in the bid for the highly rated player who has continued to impress in Brazil this season.

Matheus Fernandes is known to be a natural central midfielder and has technical abilities with the skill that helps him operate freely on the pitch of play.

Emerging reports reveal that the North London club will have to battle an unnamed German Bundesliga side as well as Spanish La Liga club, Villarreal and Italian Serie A side Genoa before they can have his signature.

It is therefore uncertain if a midfielder is a top priory for the Gunners side despite the fact that Wales international Aaron Ramsey will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has made it clear that he is keen to return the club back to the Champions League as well as win a title this season and that will be easier with new additions to strengthen the squad.
