Schalke 04 midfielder Weston McKennie will most likely miss the rest of the season after it was revealed that he has suffered ankle ligament damage.

According to his German club, Weston McKennie has ruptured his ankle ligaments.

The 20-year-old sustained the injury while playing for the United States of America in an international friendly clash with Ecuador.

McKennie was substituted in the 68th minute of the Ecuador game shortly after he suffered the injury in a duel with Ecuador striker Felipe Caicedo.

He contested for an aerial ball with the aforementioned Caicedo before landing awkwardly.

Weston McKennie was immediately ruled out of the friendly game with Chile as a result of the severity of his injury.

The American midfielder has been one of the few shining spots for his German club and it’s not surprising that he has been linked with a move to clubs like Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Schalke 04 has had a nightmarish season especially in the German Bundesliga where they are just three points clear of the relegation zone and are in 15th spot.

They were also knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 stage by Premier League champions Manchester City via a 10-2 aggregate win.

Schalke 04 are in the middle of an eight-game winless run and a six-game losing streak and their woes have been compounded with the injury to McKennie.
