Premier League giant Manchester United are hopeful that the duo of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera will soon extend their contracts at the club.

The Spanish duo will be out of contract by 2018, but the Manchester club has held positive discussions with both players over an extension to their existing contracts.

Manchester United are especially willing to keep hold of Herrera, who was named as the club’s 2017 Best Player of the Year and has been heavily linked with a transfer to La Liga giant FC Barcelona, for who his previous manager at Athletic Bilbao, Ernesto Valverde, is now coach.

While competition is tough in Manchester United’s midfield – Serbian Nemanja Matic becoming the latest signing when he penned a £38.5million deal on Monday – both players remain central to Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho’s plans, with the duo enjoying prominent roles in the side last campaign.

According to reports, 27-year-old Herrera will sign a new contract to 2021, having held positive discussions with club officials during the club’s US pre-season tour, while 29-year-old Juan Mata, is likely to pen a deal to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2020.

Spanish duo of Herrera and Mata have both been at the Manchester club since arriving back in 2014 and have played almost 200 league matches between them.
