According to reports, Liverpool are ready to splash huge cash to bring Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton next year, and they believe they can sign the Dutchman ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City.
The former Celtic defender has not played in Southampton’s last three matches, fanning speculations that they are simply trying to adapt to life without the player and will be selling him next month.
He was heavily linked with a move away from St Mary’s during the past summer transfer window after emerging as a target for a handful of top clubs in England.
The talented player submitted a transfer request in a bid to force his way out of Southampton, but they won’t allow him to leave and were able to keep hold of him.
They have however resigned to losing the player in January, with top English sides like Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City ready to fight for his signature.
But, according to the Daily Mirror, Southampton are demanding £70million for Van Dijk.
If any club should pay such amount for Virgil, the Dutchman would become the most expensive defender in football.
Liverpool are said to be confident of beating their rivals to get Van Dijk’s signature, and they believed his most preferred destination is Anfield.
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal are also believed to be monitoring the player’s situation at St Mary’s ahead of next year.
