Premier League champions Manchester City moved a step closer to retaining their title after they secured top spot with a straightforward win over relegation-threatened Cardiff City.
The Citizens started the day two points behind then leaders Liverpool and with the knowledge that a win over the Bluebirds will be more than enough to see them usurp the Reds into first place on the Premier League table.
In the end, Manchester City secured the win they needed via a 2-0 victory at home to Cardiff City on Wednesday night.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola rested several players for the Cardiff City game with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva not involved in the game.
Kevin De Bruyne gave the Citizens a fantastic start as early as the 6th minute after finishing from a tight angle off a long ball from Spanish center back Aymeric Laporte.
Manchester City added a second goal from Leroy Sane on the stroke of the halftime to give his side a comfortable lead at the end of the first half.
The scoreline would have been more comprehensive if not for Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge who made some outstanding saves to keep the hosts at bay in the second half.
The win took Manchester City above Liverpool at the Premier League summit with six league games left to play.
