Liverpool supporters will not be glad about reports emanating today suggesting manager Jurgen Klopp rejected the opportunity to sign two top-class defenders this summer.

The Merseyside giant spent the majority of the summer transfer window chasing targets, unsuccessfully as it resulted, defender Virgil van Dijk, with Premier League side Southampton simply refusing to cash in on the Dutchman.

However, reports emanating from Holland claim the Reds did have options lined up – with Ajax star’s Davinson Sanchez among the alternative targets they looked at, as per De Telegraaf.

The Colombian defender of course signed for Tottenham Hotspurs in a £42m transfer deal – and the defender has looked like a good signing for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Furthermore, it’s also reported in Italy that Klopp’s team also passed up the opportunity to sign defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese international defender’s name was circulated to the Reds, but only if they paid Serie A side Napoli’s £57million valuation – less than the figure they were willing to pay for Dutchman Van Dijk.

However, Jurgen Klopp also turned down the opportunity to sign Koulibaly to focus on their bid to land Virgil Van Dijk – fruitless efforts.

With the Red’s defensive failures under question this season once again, the decision not to bring in either of these two strong defenders will further annoy their already frustrated supporters.
