Confirmed: Ex-Chelsea Star To Return To Nigerian Squad For AFCON

Middlesbrough midfielder John Mikel Obi will return to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the upcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

This is according to the Super Eagles manager who spoke to Sporting Life about the former Chelsea player.

According to Gernot Rohr, he had a successful meeting with the player and that an announcement would be made in the next few days.

John Mikel Obi has not played for the Super Eagles of Nigeria since the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.

The Ex-Chelsea midfielder captained Nigeria at the tournament as the Super Eagles crashed out at the group stage.

He was absent as the Super Eagles of Nigeria booked their place at the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt.

John Mikel Obi has been able to revive his football career in England with English Championship club Middlesbrough who narrowly missed out on the playoffs for the Premier League.

He joined the club as a free agent in January after signing a short-term deal and the former Lynn Oslo star is expected to stay at the club beyond this summer.

John Mikel Obi and Nigeria will be on the hunt for a fourth AFCON title when hostilities begin in Egypt next month.
