Chelsea News: How Mikel Obi Secured England Return With Middlesbrough

Super Eagles skipper John Mikel Obi has sealed a sensational return to England after signing for Championship club Middlesbrough.

Mikel Obi, 31, has been handed the number two jersey at the club after his transfer was confirmed earlier on Thursday.

The former Chelsea player joins Boro on a short-term deal until the end of the season and he would be hoping to propel the Midlands club to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough are in fifth position on the English Championship table and six points from Norwich City who occupy second place as well as the final spot for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The first two teams are promoted to the Premier League automatically while the next four teams (3rd to 6th position) will fight for the last promotion spot via the playoffs.

Nigerian international John Mikel Obi had a relatively successful career with Stamford Bridge outfit Chelsea during his first spell in the United Kingdom.

Mikel won many trophies during his 11-year spell at Chelsea including two Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League title.

The experienced midfielder has been a free agent since November when he left Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda whom he joined after leaving Chelsea in 2017.
