Manchester United are reported to have opened talks with star defender Chris Smalling in a bid to hand him a new and improved contract that will have him remain at the club for a longer period of time.

With an initial weekly wage of about £80,000 the report hints that the Red Devils could increase it to £120,000 per week for Chris Smalling as a way of rewarding his good work at the club.

The current deal for the 28-year-old expires at the end of the season which makes it necessary for a new deal to be signed or United will risk losing out on the impressive player.

Although the Old Trafford side have got the option to trigger a clause in his contract by extending his stay for another year against his wish, both parties are on the same page and will rather seal a new deal.

It is also reported that manager Jose Mourinho is a big fan of Chris Smalling and will rather prefer he stays even as he moves into the winter transfer market to add more options to his defence.

The Portuguese international is very particular about his defence and there are hints he will be doing some business in January.
