Arsenal playmaker, Mesut Ozil has retired from international football but his supposed treatment by the German Football Association could have a longer effect on the country than expected.

The image of the German football association was stained with racism allegations after Ozil and team-mate Ilkay Gundogan, who are of Turkish origin met with the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May with pictures of them flooding the social media.

This sparked political tension owing to the history of both countries with Ozil being attacked by the German media.

The poor outing of the German national team at the Russia 2018 World Cup also sparked criticism on Ozil who is believed to be used as a scapegoat.

All of the blame was, however, directed to the country’s football association for failing to protect the player.

The effect of this could be a threat to the country’s bid to host the EURO 2024 but German Football Association (DFB) president Reinhard Grindel believes it will not.

While admitting that Ozil’s case cannot be pushed away, he affirmed that they Still have the chance to win the hosting bid.

Grindel said his personality is well known and can be trusted both in the country’s association and UEFA as well, noting that it has nothing to do with a player.

Although, pundits opine that the fact that Turkey would be returning back to the tournament makes it an issue that will be thoroughly considered to ensure the safety and comfortability of every participating team.
