Former Chelsea shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois has revealed the reason behind his transfer to European champions Real Madrid during this summer’s transfer window.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper swapped Chelsea for Real Madrid in the summer after forcing the hand of his former club.

The Blues had no choice but to sell him with a year left on his contract at the club.

The Belgian international goalkeeper had earlier resisted the club’s attempts to tie him down to a new Chelsea contract.

He joined the Champions League holders after the Spanish La Liga giants agreed to a fee of around £35m for his signature with Croatian midfielder Matteo Kovacic signing for the Blues on a one-year deal from Real Madrid as part of the transfer.

Courtois spoke about his move to Real Madrid in his recent interview.

According to him, he joined Real Madrid in search of more competition and that the transfer will also afford him the opportunity to spend more time with his Madrid-based family.

Thibaut Courtois joined Chelsea from Belgian side Genk in 2011 and he was immediately loaned out to Spanish La Liga giants where he spent three straight seasons before he returned to Stamford Bridge in 2014 having finished as a losing finalist with Atletico in the Champions League.
