The Step-by-Step Basmati Rice Recipe

Here is the exact, step-by-step process Baron describes to get fluffy, perfectly cooked rice every single time:

1. The Golden Ratio

Always use a ratio of two parts water to one part rice. For example, if you are cooking 1 cup of Basmati rice, you will need 2 cups of water.

2. Soak the Rice

Combine the rice and water in your pot and let it soak for at least 30 minutes. Baron notes that this step is very flexible, you can even let it soak all day if you are prepping meals ahead of time.

3. Bring to a Boil

Place your pot over medium heat. Bring the rice and water to a boil. You will know it is ready for the next step as soon as the water starts bubbling.

4. Simmer

Once the water is boiling, cut the heat down to low and let it simmer for just another minute or two.

5. Let it Rest

Turn the heat off completely and remove the pot from the burner. Let the pot sit undisturbed for at least 30 minutes to an hour.

💡 Baron’s Pro-Tip: The Visual Cue

How do you know for sure when it is ready to eat? At the [01:39:16] mark of the episode, Baron shares his specific visual indicator: watch for the curl.

After letting the pot sit off the heat for 30 to 60 minutes, take a look at the top layer of the rice. When the ends of the individual grains start to curl, you know your Basmati rice has reached absolute perfection!
