Chelsea have been handed a huge blow in their pursuit of highly rated Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele following the news that Premier League title rivals Liverpool are preparing a club-record bid for him.

Several media reports on Wednesday claimed that the Reds are preparing a bid of around £85m in the quest to sign the 21-year-old ahead of other interested suitors.

Premier League sides like Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with the France World Cup winner for the majority of the last one month.

Ousmane Dembele was part of the 23-man France squad that won this summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia via a 4-2 win over surprise finalists Croatia in their final clash in the Russian capital of Moscow.

He signed for Barcelona last summer after the Spanish La Liga giants agreed to pay an initial fee of €105m plus an additional fee of €35m in add-ons.

He struggled with different injuries in his first season.

Dembele was in and out of the Barcelona team but still played his part in the double winning team.

Barcelona won both the Spanish La Liga and Spanish Copa Del Rey titles.

His second season (this season) has been affected by various disciplinary issues thereby leading to questions over his long-term future at the club.
