Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he dropped Alexis Sanchez to the bench in their game against Liverpool because he wants more aerial threat up front.
The Gunners travel to the Mersey side to face Liverpool in a crucial game for both sides, but Arsene Wenger chose not to start Sanchez and instead went for Danny Welbeck in a bid to be more direct aerially.
Explaining his decision, the Frenchman said: ‘We’re going with Giroud and Welbeck up front because we will need to be a bit more direct and strong in the air,’
‘Sanchez will certainly play a part in the game.’
The Chilean star has been in the news lately due to speculations regarding his future at the Emirates with reports the former Barcelona forward wants to leave the club at the next summer transfer window.
Mesut Ozil who has also stalled on renewing his contract with the Gunners did not travel with the squad due to a protacted illness.
Confirming his unavailability, Arsene Wenger said before kick-off of the Liverpool game: “Mesut hasn’t travelled because he is ill. He had to stay in London so he is watching from home”
A victory for the Gunners will see them leapfrog Manchester City into the third position on the Premier League table.
