After what seems to be a slow start in the summer transfer market, premier league champions Chelsea have eventually made their second major signing this summer.
After being heavily linked with the Stamford Bridge club in recent times, the Blues have confirmed the signing of Antonio Rudiger bought from Serie A side AS Roma for a fee around £34 million.
The Germany defender becomes the Blues second signing of the summer after the free transfer of Argentine shot-stopper Willy Caballero.
The 24-year-old shone during his two seasons spell with Roma and is said to have been on Antonio Conte’s radar last summer before picking up an injury that hindered the move.
And it was reported over the weekend that Antonio Conte’s side had agreed to a deal with the Serie A heavyweights for the 24-year-old, who was then said to have flown to Los Angeles to complete a medical with Chelsea.
Chelsea have been linked with top defenders like Leonardo Bonucci and Virgil Van Dijk following the departures of the duo of John Terry and Nathan Ake, but it appears their respective clubs are not interested in selling them yet.
Rudiger, however, came cheaper and has signed a five-year deal with Chelsea ahead of a busy campaign next season. He has 17 caps for the German national side and helped them win the Confederations Cup in Russia.
